Bangladesh political parties are prevented from holding meetings

Jamaat-e-Islami, the third largest political party in Bangladesh, is being prevented from holding public meetings by the government

The government is not allowing Jamaat-e-Islami, the third largest ruling party in Bangladesh, to hold meetings and rallies ahead of the upcoming national elections. On July 10, they held a peaceful rally in the capital. As a result, they decided to hold a rally in the divisional city. But the government is not giving them any permission. As a result, their political rights are being taken away. The press conference they held without getting the permission of the assembly was brought up exactly.

“Administration has done wrong by not allowing rally at Laldighi Maidan on July 22, we expect non-partisan role from them”

Strong condemnation and protest for not allowing assembly in Laldighi Maidan: Muhammad Shahjahan in press conference of Chittagong Metropolitan Jamaat.
Today, 19 July 2023, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Central Executive Council member, Assistant Secretary General and Chittagong Metropolitan Ameer Muhammad Shahjahan said,
“Establishment of caretaker government, Amir Jamaat Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and other leaders, including the release of the leaders and the 10-point demand and respect for the law, including curbing the unrestrained rise in commodity prices, I am calling for permission and cooperation for the July 22 rally organized by the Chittagong Metropolitan Jamaat soon.
In order to realize the 10-point demand, a press conference was organized today to highlight the latest situation of the rally organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Chittagong on Saturday, July 22 at historic Laldighi Maidan.
In a written statement, Muhammad Shahjahan said, “You are all aware that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is one of the largest political parties in the country. It has its organizational presence in all areas of the country, towns and villages everywhere. Jamaat’s nominated candidates were elected in almost all the national elections held in Bangladesh (6 in 1979, 10 in 1986, 20 in 1991, Allama Delwar in 1996).
3 including Hossain Saeedee, 21 in 2001 and 2 in 2008). Two Jamaat leaders have created a record as ministers by performing their duties with integrity and devotion. No one could raise a corruption charge of two rupees against them. Jamaat is working all over the country as a responsible, dynamic, patriotic and philanthropic political party. For more than a decade and a half, the ruling fascist government has taken away the freedom of speech and other freedoms of the people of the country. People’s meeting-
The constitutional right of assembly, procession, meeting has been taken away. The right to vote and rice has been taken away. In particular, unjust and illegal restrictions have been imposed on all activities of Jamaat. Our central office and branch offices are closed. Any public activity is being prevented.

He said, “You know that on June 5, Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka Metropolitan South Branch asked for permission to hold a public meeting, but permission was not granted.” Later on June 10, Jamaat-e-Islami organized a huge rally after getting permission at the last moment. Following this, on July 22, the Chittagong Metropolitan Organization sent a delegation of lawyers to the CMP seeking permission for a rally at the historic Laldighi Maidan. Those who went to the commissioner’s office to inquire about the permit again on July 17.
It is with a very heavy heart that we have to inform you that the CMP Commissioner’s office has refused permission for our rally without assigning any reason. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is a systematic, democratic and tolerant organization. We want democracy to be re-established in Bangladesh, the rule of law to be established, people’s freedom of vote-rice-speech-individual to be restored. We protest this negative role of the government. This behavior of the administration is creating their partisan image, undermining neutrality. We think that the government will play a role in creating a suitable environment in view of the upcoming elections, it is possible to ensure this environment by providing the people with the right to vote and vote, freedom of expression, meetings and gatherings.

He also said, “There are only a few months left for the 12th national election. Instead of creating an environment for a free, fair and participatory election, the authoritarian government continues to perpetuate political repression. Overall, the country is in a deep crisis. The naked attack on an opposition candidate in a by-election in Gulshan is the latest example of so-called neutral elections under the party government. Out of 11 national elections, 3 elections held under the caretaker government were widely accepted at home and abroad.
Therefore, there is no alternative to hold the upcoming national elections under a caretaker government to free the country and the nation from the crisis. To return the country to the path of democracy, rule of law and human rights from the grip of fascism, I call upon all political parties and patriots to build a mass movement against the misrule and oppression of the current government.
The press conference was also attended by members of the Central Majlish Shura and Naib Ameer of Nagar Jamaat. AJM Obaidullah, Muhammad Nazrul Islam, City Secretary Principal Muhammad Nurul Amin, Assistant Secretary Muhammad Ullah, FM Yunuch, Organizing Secretary and former Councilor Principal Shamsuzzaman Helali, Sramik Kalyan Federation Chittagong City President SM Lutfar Rahman and others.
